Nomads
Until last century about 30% of the total population of Iran was nomads. They
had active roles in rise and fall of the Iranian dynasties. Herding together
with seasonal migration is their distinctive feature. They move between summer
(Yeilagh) and winter (qeshlagh) settlements, en route using
pastures. Nowadays, almost 1.2 millions of the population in Iran has nomadic
life. They posses’ 24 millions sheep and goats and they are scattered in 20
provinces. Two most famous tribes of nomads are Baktiaries, around Esfahan and
Qashqaies around Shiraz. In addition to husbandry, Iranian nomads weave carpets,
kilims and gabbes. They migrate two times a year. First, late March and their
second exodus will be early in early September which are recommended time for
nomadic tours.
